Field Trip to The Nature Conservancy’s Voorhees Preserve November 1 from Noon – 3:00. The Voorhees Preserve contains 720 scenic acres along the Rappahannock River in Westmoreland County and is part of a network of stunning conservation lands along the River. With over 4 miles of hiking trails, it is truly a treasure. It is part of the Old Growth Forest Network and contains some amazing stands of old growth trees, including a number of 200 - 300-year-old Beech trees overlooking the Beaver Ponds and some ancient Tulip Poplars, affectionately known as the Three Sisters high on the ridge above the river. It also contains some incredible high bluffs with stunning panoramic overlooks, diverse freshwater tidal marshes, stunning flora and fauna, and provides excellent habitat for bald eagles and other wildlife including several active eagle nests. Join us for a walk through some fantastic forests, low-stream valleys lush with ferns and climb the steep trail to the scenic overlook that allows for views extending far across the winding river and marshes. The first half of the trail is relatively flat and easy but becomes hilly with a final steep hike to the overlook. Walk as far as you want or take another fairly level trail for a half mile hike to the Beaver Ponds instead.
