Potting Party - new date
Requesting volunteers to help with the potting up of 100 bare root plants at the Gruben's "Birdhouse". It would be helpful for the volunteers who are willing to help to let Jeff Wainscott know so we can plan accordingly. We’ll provide the potting soil but you should bring a hand trowel for filling the provided pots.

Hickory Hollow New Year Walk – Sunday, January 4, 2026
As many in the Chapter know, we have held a New Year’s Day walk on January 1st for over a decade but this year it will be held on Sunday, January 4th instead. The reason is that Belle Isle State Park has a First Day Walk that in past year’s was held earlier in the day. But this year the Park’s walk will be held at 1 pm and is in direct conflict with the Society’s walk.
Field Trip: The Nature Conservancy’s Voorhees Preserve
Field Trip to The Nature Conservancy’s Voorhees Preserve November 1 from Noon – 3:00. The Voorhees Preserve contains 720 scenic acres along the Rappahannock River in Westmoreland County and is part of a network of stunning conservation lands along the River. With over 4 miles of hiking trails, it is truly a treasure.

On Sunday, Sept. 7th, the annual Fall Native Plant Sale at Good Luck Cellars on Good Luck Road in Kilmarnock will run from 1pm until 3 pm. Knowledgeable native plant Society members and landscape designers will be on site to answer all of your native plant questions – right plant, right place.

Cat Point is a wonderful example of a Tidal Freshwater Marsh, protected by the refuge and the Rappahannock Indian Tribe. This field trip follows the April 17th NN VNPS program presented by biologist Maeve Coker on freshwater tidal marshes Join us to see the spectacular flora and fauna of a Freshwater Tidal Marsh and how critical this habitat is for all.

Please come help pot up a large order of gorgeous native plugs arriving from Mid-Atlantic Nurseries late next week. We have some really fabulous species – Milkweeds galore, Cinnamon ferns, compact Coastal Joe-pye-weed, Cardinal Flowers, Great Blue Lobelia, Sweet Goldenrod and more! We have several hundred plugs arriving, so many hands make quick and fun work!
Please bring a trowel, garden gloves or any tools you prefer. We will supply pots and potting soil. We will have 60 bareroot plants to pot up.

We believe this should be in bloom along with False Hellebore, Redring (or White) Milkweed, Large Twayblade orchid, Summer Bluet, Partridgeberry, and more!

Spring Ephemerals VNPS Members Walk
Spring is finally here and next week should be a great time to visit our early floral friends at Hickory Hollow Natural Area Preserve in Lancaster. Next week’s weather forecast is sunny to mostly sunny with some rains forecasted but Thursday the 10th looks just perfect for spring botanical walk. We will meet in the Hickory Hollow parking lot at 1 pm.
First Potting Party of the season
Our first Potting Party is this Tuesday, April 8th at 10:00 am the Gruben’s “Bird House” .
Please bring a trowel, garden gloves or any tools you prefer. We will supply pots and potting soil. We will have 60 bareroot plants to pot up.
Volunteers also needed beforehand (April 8) at 8:45 – 9:45to come divide some Wild Strawberries at Betsy’s house.
Please come help divide some Wild Strawberry plants from my garden to take to the Grubens to pot up for the Strawberry Festival in May. Bring a trowel and gloves.

The First Butterfly Count of the season on the Northern Neck is slated for Tuesday 28 May 2024.
This is the Northumberland-Lancaster Spring 2024 Butterfly Count. This is the fifth year for the spring count for the NNK.

NNVNPS Hickory Hollow New Year’s Day Walk
New Year’s Day is the perfect day to get outside and start the New Year off naturally and focused on plants. A number of years ago our Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society started a New Year’s Day Walk at Hickory Hollow Natural Area Preserve but the scourge of Covid forced that to be canceled for the past few years. But alas, the Walk has been reinstated this new year for Sunday, Jan. 1 at 1 pm with the co-sponsorship of the NN Audubon. The temperature is predicted to be in the fifties.

NNNPS Plant Sale at Dug-in Farms
Be sure to visit the NNNPS Fall Native Plant Sale, being held this year at Dug In Farms off of Fleets Bay Rd every day from Sept 18 – Oct 10 to find beautiful Northern Neck native plants to grace your gardens. Native Plant Society experts will be on hand Saturday morning during the sale from 9:00-12:00 to help you pick the perfect plants for your garden.
A special emphasis on the NNNPS Plant Sale are Shoreline Plants. Dug In Farm will be having a variety of Shoreline Native Plants for sale and is now accepting orders for them. Please see Carolyn at Dug In for more information.
Citizen Science Butterfly Census Count
The actual in-the-field butterfly count will take place on May 25th and follows the North American Butterfly Association’s count protocol as well as COVID-19 protocols. This citizen science data project began in 1993 and collects data from over 450 sites. It is similar to the oldest continuing citizen science project in the US (119 years), the National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count. Details on this butterfly count will be provided at the workshop as well as in local papers next week.
Virtual Butterfly Identification Workshop
The workshop will help in the identification of our local spring butterflies that may be seen during the actual count the following week. Further, life cycle and host plant information will be presented for the butterflies. The goal is to help all attendees improve their skills at identification and understanding of our local butterflies and their native host plants.

Field Trip in Hickory Hollow Natural Area
Free and open to the Public - the Northern Neck Chapters of the Virginia Native Plant Society (NNNPS) and the Master Naturalists (NNMN) will lead a field trip in Hickory Hollow Natural Area Preserve on January 1, 2019 meeting at 2:00 in the parking lot.
